. the situation in cairo changing hour to hour. ian lee live in cairo, thank you. >>> the fbi is expected to arrive in libya today to begin investigating the attack that killed four americans. cnn intelligence correspondent suzanne kelly joins us now from washington with the latest information about what the u.s. intelligence agencies knew and when they knew t.suzanne, what do you know? >> reporter: >> right, randi. cnn found out from a u.s. int intelligence source there was a cable sent warning about the existence of this anti-muslim film on the internet and also warning that they had seen an uptick in the number of people who had been clicking on the link and watching the film. they sent a cable from cairo warning them that that was out there. however, there was no specific warning attached that an attack was imminent. a couple of things intelligence did know going into this. there are well-equipped groups already in place in benghazi. a lot of al qaeda sympathizers there as well, these pockets of al qaeda sympathizers. knowledge of this film, when you pull the pieces together, you get
the fbi is investigating. my guess is there's no formal al qaeda connection. there are groups that are supporters, it's a shadowy group of people. they might have had some historical connections to al qaeda in the past. certainly the leader of al qaeda talked about the recent death of a kind of key al qaeda libyan leader just before this event, there might be some kind of connection. but i think it's pretty early to be making any definitive conclusio conclusions. the libyans have arrested some people. there is an interview with a libyan official who says this seems to be a deliberate attack, because not only did they attack a consulate, they also attacked a safe house. it implies some kind of penetration of the libyan security services by this group. >> and it also occurred on the 11th anniversary of 9/11. the effort to sack the u.s. embassy in cairo also occurring on the anniversary of 9/11. is that coincidental? what do you make of that? >> it's a very interesting coincidence, if it's a coincidence. the history here, wolf, is that no one was paying any attention to this vide
, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, kate. we understand that an fbi team of special agents has arrived here in benghazi. they're keeping a low profile for security reasons and are expected to at some point begin investigating what exactly happened at that consulate. they're going to sift through the ashes and look for any clues that can identify any individuals involved in that attack. we know that the u.s. military has deployed its resources, including drones and other intelligence gathering mechanisms to try to keep an eye and ear out for any of these people involved. they're getting a lot of cooperation from the libyan government. the libyan government says that they believe this was a pre-planned attack, not an outburst of spontaneous violence. and they're also saying that they have four individuals in custody that they are questioning who may have possibly important information that could benefit the americans. they also have several other individuals under surveillance. but as we've seen in the past, one of the more difficult things here on the ground is to actually m
morning, sam. we understand that a team of fbi agents has arrived in benghazi and they have begun their investigation to try to determine who was responsible for the attack on the u.s. consulate that killed ambassador stevens and three other americans. we know that they will be sifting through the rubble and ashes at the u.s. consulate and identifying individuals who may have played a role in that assault. we also understand that u.s. intelligence agent sits have deployed their assets across the country to try to pick up any intelligence that can help in that search. all indications right now according to libyan officials is this is a pre-planned attack. they have identified a few individuals. four are in custody of the libyan government. they believe these individuals may have some information that may be of value as to who is responsible for the attack. they also say they have several others under the libyan government surveillance. right now though all fingers are pointing to at least one militant group here that is closely affiliated with or at least inspired by al qaeda. that
